DESIGN PROCESS

ui design

For many of us, health is not only about present well-being, but also about carefully managing our medical history.

Yet we often feel overwhelmed by stacks of old medical documents, and missing information can lead to misunderstandings in communication with doctors. Amid this sense of overload, we identified a clear gap in the system fully committed to designing a solution that improves the management and communication of medical information.

Concept

Our health platform simplifies healthcare management by providing an interactive digital health record. It offers a comprehensive overview of an individual’s medical history, along with features such as seamless transfer of medical findings, convenient appointment scheduling, doctor-to-doctor communication for improved collaboration, and an integrated digital emergency id card for life-saving information.

Process

The foundation of our project was established through an interview with a physician, which provided key insights.

The main goal is to ensure that the tool is accessible exclusively to patients. It is explicitly not intended for use by health insurance providers in order to prevent potential misuse. The implementation of this tool aims to avoid duplicate examinations and significantly improve communication within the healthcare system. Based on these findings, a detailed information architecture was developed, serving as a crucial basis for the further development

of our project.

How can appointments

and communication be

simplified?

The homepage serves as a central dashboard, giving users access to key features like personal details, allergies, long-term medications, and pre-existing conditions.

Patients can update their health data easily by uploading or scanning medical reports directly via smartphone, keeping records clear and up to date.

The digital health record features "Human as Map", an interactive body-based timeline of the user's medical history. Users can select a year to view past illnesses and filter by body systems, such as muscles or bones. Clicking on a marked area reveals related reports and the progression of the condition over time.

A reminder alerts the patient to an overdue checkup. After booking, relevant records are suggested for review. A preparation sheet ensures both patient and doctor are well-informed—streamlining the process and avoiding unnecessary tests.

pass quickly accessible?

Another key feature is the automatic integration with Apple Medical ID. It allows first responders to access critical information, like allergies or past conditions, without a password, helping save time and prevent errors in emergencies.

Academic Recognition

& Presentation

Our digital health record concept was referenced in the research paper “Concept of a human-centered electronic health record” (Remlinger et al., 2024), published in Current Directions in Biomedical Engineering.
We also had the opportunity to present our project at the VDE DGBMT Annual Conference, where it was showcased as an example of human-centered digital healthcare design.

We are grateful for Prof. Remlinger’s invitation. Interestingly, although we approached the topic independently, both his research and our concept revealed similar insights.
The discussion around electronic health records remains complex, especially concerning data protection, which continues to spark debate. It was a pleasure to engage

with diverse perspectives and receive valuable feedback throughout the event.
